Introduction to SwadeLabs
Why I got into game development, what I care about building, and what this blog is going to explore.
I have always liked building things. When I was younger I would make comic books, create little stories, and even act out fights in class with my hands as characters. I got in trouble for it a lot, but looking back it was just me trying to create something.
In high school that turned into building robots and making small games. I was not just playing games anymore, I wanted to understand how they worked and how I could make my own.
After school I worked at Costco. On weekends my friends and I would run Smash tournaments and talk about game ideas. At one point we even designed our own fighting game. I wrote a full story for it that ended up being thousands of pages long. I would work on it during my shifts whenever I had time.
Later I got an opportunity to work at Costco Head Office. I passed the test and moved to Ottawa. I started working on their website, and since I already knew HTML, CSS, and JavaScript from high school, I was able to solve problems quickly and understand what I was doing.
That job was only temporary, and eventually I got moved into accounting. That is where everything changed. I was not allowed to code. Everything had to be done manually, even things that could have been automated. I struggled a lot there. It felt like I was stuck and not allowed to build anything anymore.
Around that time I played a game called OMORI. It was made in a small engine, but the story and experience hit me harder than I expected. It reminded me why I wanted to do this in the first place.
That is when I decided to go all in. I started studying again, long nights and long days, and eventually left that path to pursue game development properly.
Right now I focus on building systems that feel immersive. I like when mechanics are not just functional, but something the player can feel through interaction, camera, and presentation.
For me it is not just about making something work. It is about making it feel right.
This blog is going to be where I break that process down. Some posts will be technical, some will be about design, and some will just be experiments. The goal is to show how things are built and how ideas evolve over time.
This is for people who want to create. The ones who know they are meant to build something, but maybe have not fully stepped into it yet.
